The Diuretic Benefits Of Horsetail

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Horsetail grass is a perennial flowerless plant also known as bottle brush, horse willow, toadpipe, Dutch rushes, Corn Horsetail, Quyroughi, Atkuyrugu, and Shavegrass. Its medicinal value is found in the hollow, jointed stems. Roman physician Galen first recommended its use for treatment for bleeding ulcers, arthritis, kidney and bladder troubles, and tuberculosis. The Chinese still use it as a remedy for eye inflammations such as conjunctivitis and corneal disorders, to cool a fever, and to treat dysentery, flu, swellings, and hemorrhoids. The dried or fresh green stems of horsetail are usually collected in summer.

The horsetail is one of the most diuretic species in all the plants. This means it is effective in eliminating water from the body. The secret is in the chemical ingredient equisetonin and because of it horsetail can actually increase unination up to 30%. Therefore, it is often used in products for weight loss. Equisetonin and potassium are also beneficial for this and calcium, magnesium, ascorbic acid and caffeic acid also contribute to this diuretic ability.

Another one of the benefits of horsetail is its ability to help knock out bacterial diseases of the lower urinary tract and flush out bladder and kidney stones. Slowly healing wounds are speeded up with horsetail because of the quantity of silica in the plant. This also helps repair bony tissues by helping to fix calcium. Then the body can store a greater quantity of calcium and this results in stronger bones or tendons. Try it if you are dealing with osteoporosis.

Horsetail is an excellent herbal source of silicon, magnesium, calcium, iron, chromium, manganese, and potassium. Because of this mineral content horsetail is recommended for anemia and general debility. Try it also in treating lung damage such as tuberculosis or emphysema, as well as prostatitis, enuresis, urinary tract infections and muscle cramps. Horsetail nourishes the body’s connective tissue as well as nails, hair, skin, and bones.

Horsetail’s toning and astringent action make it of value in the treatment of incontinence and bed-wetting in children as well as treating BPH in men (problems related to an enlarged prostate). Recent research suggests that horsetail is effective in removing lead accumulations in the body.

Taken internally, horsetail bulk herbs are able to help stop bleeding from ulcers and diminish heavy menstrual bleeding. Gargle the tea to treat a sore throat, bleeding gums, or mouth ulcers. Applied externally as a compress, it will help to heal fractures, sprains, wounds, sores, and skin problems.

Externally make a compress with 10 grams of powdered herb in 1 liter of water. If you take horsetail internally, drink plenty of water. An average daily dose is 6 grams of the stem a day. To make horsetail tea, pour boiling water over 2 to 3 grams of the herb, boil it for 5 minutes, and then strain the mixture after 10 to 15 minutes. Drink some several times a day between meals.

Overuse of licorice with horsetail (and too much alcohol) may deplete potassium in the body and cause a risk of cardiac toxicity and thiamine deficiency. Because of its potency, some advise people with these conditions to avoid horsetail: pregnant, breast-feeding, those with impaired heart or kidney function, with liver problems, those taking a cardiac glycoside, and who have a history or potential of thiamine deficiency. The plant contains equisetic acid, which is nearly identical to aconitic acid. This can be a heart and nerve sedative that is poisonous when taken in excessive amounts.

Obesity is Not Healthy

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Good afternoon,

When do I have time to exercise? I am so busy, my work schedule is hectic, my weekends are so full of activities. Well then, I guess the number one question that we need to ask ourselves is, Am I worth it, how do I want to feel, how do I want to look, how healthy do I really want to be? Do I matter or make a difference? Yes, Yes, Yes, is the answer to all of the above questions that I just asked myself.

The next question is how and when do I schedule myself into this healthy picture. Maybe I can get up an hour earlier, Oh, yes, I will be a little extra tired for a few day, but I can honestly tell you that it will be worth it. You will notice your clothes starting to feel a little more comfortable, those jeans fit lots nicer and you will start to feel more like doing more and then this leads to increasing your activities and having doing exercises. Ask a neighbor or a co-worker to join you. Ask your children and your dog to come with you. Play a game of ball in the park, catch a few softball or baseballs with your children, just do an extra activity and see how much better you feel, you sleep better and you will look wonderful.

What is obesity?

Being obese means having so much body fat that your health is in danger. Having too much body fat can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, sleep apnea, and stroke.

Because of these risks, it is important to lose weight even if you do not feel bad now. It is hard to change eating habits and exercise habits. But you can do it if you make a plan.

How do you know if you are obese?

You can use a measurement called a body mass index, or BMI, to decide whether your weight is dangerous to your health. The BMI is a combination of your height and weight. If you have a BMI of 30 or higher, your extra weight is putting your health in danger. If you are Asian, your health may be at risk with a BMI of 27.5 or higher.

Where you carry your body fat may be as important as how many extra pounds you have. People who carry too much fat around the middle, rather than around the hips, are more likely to have health problems. In women, a waist size of 35 in. (88 cm) or more raises the chance for disease. In men, a waist size of 40 in. (101 cm) or more raises the chance for disease.2 In Asian people, health problems are seen with a smaller waist size. In Asian women, a waist size of 32 in. (80 cm) or more raises the chance for disease. In Asian men, a waist size of 36 in. (90 cm) or more raises the chance for disease.1

What causes obesity?

When you take in more calories than you burn off, you gain weight. How you eat, how active you are, and other things affect how your body uses calories and whether you gain weight.

If your family members are obese, you may have inherited a tendency to gain weight. And your family also helps form your eating and lifestyle habits, which can lead to obesity.

Also, our busy lives make it harder to plan and cook healthy meals. For many of us, it’s easier to reach for prepared foods, go out to eat, or go to the drive-through. But these foods are often high in fat and calories. Portions are often too large. Work schedules, long commutes, and other commitments also cut into the time we have for physical activity.

There is no quick fix to being overweight. To lose weight, you must burn more calories than you take in.

You’ve tried diets, but you always gain the weight back. What can you do?

Focus on health, not diets. Diets are hard to maintain and usually do not work in the long run. It is very hard to stay with a diet that includes lots of big changes in your eating habits.

Instead of a diet, focus on lifestyle changes that will improve your health and achieve the right balance of energy and calories. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in. You can do it by eating healthy foods in reasonable amounts and becoming more active. And you need to do it every day.

Little steps mean a lot. Losing just 10 lb (4.5 kg) can make a difference in your health.

Make a plan for change. Work with your doctor to develop a plan that will work for you. Ask family members and friends for help in keeping with your plan. Ask your doctor to recommend a dietitian to help you with meal planning.

When you stray from your plan, do not get upset. Figure out what got you off track and how you can fix it.

How can you stay on your plan for change?

It is hard to change habits. You have to be ready. Make sure this is the right time for you. Are you ready to make a plan and stay on it? Do you have the support of your family and friends? Do you know what your first steps will be? Becoming healthier and staying that way is a lifelong effort.

Most people have more success when they make small changes, one step at a time. For example, you might eat an extra piece of fruit, walk 10 minutes more, or add more vegetables to your meals.

Studies show that people who keep track of what they eat are better at losing weight. Keep a notebook where you can write down everything you eat and drink each day. You may be surprised to see how much you are eating. Use a calorie counter to add up your calories. (You can find calorie counters online and at bookstores.)

As you keep track of calories, look at whether you skip meals, when you eat, how often you eat out, and how many fruits and vegetables you eat. This will help you see patterns that you may want to change.

You may want to write down the amount of physical activity you’ve had each day and compare the calories you burned to those you took in.

Can you take medicines or have surgery?

Surgery and medicines do not work by themselves. Most people also need to make changes in what they eat and how active they are.

Before your doctor will prescribe medicines or surgery, he or she will probably want you to work on diet and activity for at least 6 months. Even if your doctor gives you medicines or recommends surgery, you will need to keep your new healthy habits for the rest of your life.

“For that healthy body try the mediterranean Diet has been in place for thousands of years with plenty of formal research to back it. It is not a Fad Diet like many on the market. With this in mind, you can be proud of on-selling such a quality diet. In fact, I recommend you do a little research. Even if you only check the Harvard Research Information you’ll be impressed. It’s so much more satisfying promoting quality and knowing you may be helping someone while you carry on your business and profit!==”

These are just a few of my suggestions for you to start on that journey and not become obesity crowd. Just begin. Just believe that you can do it. You can do it.

Tips for Health on Exercise

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Good morning,

Exercise and eating lots of raw foods are a great beginning to a great idea today as our health matters.  Lets’ share with a few ideas on doing this today.

Cut Out Excess Calories and Pleasure Foods

I’m not talking about dieting because to me that word sounds temporary and unsustainable and negative. I’m talking about a sensible and attractive lifestyle change that is logical and positive. You don’t need all that crap. Eating certainly needs to be enjoyable but eating in excess of what your body really needs is unacceptable 90 percent of the time. Do yourself a favour and put food into perspective.

Food only exists to fuel, nourish, maintain and rebuild the body. Humans have made eating a way of life and we let it get out of control treating ourselves constantly to food that is very high in empty calories and low in nutrition.

Junk food tastes good but is that short few minutes of pleasure really worth deteriorating the function and capability of your body?

Good food tastes good. I think that there is just as much pleasure and satisfaction or even more out of supplying your body with nutritious foods as there is with eating fast foods, desserts, sugar and chocolate and soda pops.

If you have a great training session a healthy protein drink or a steak and salad is what you feel like because that is what is going to support the desired outcomes of your exercise routine. Lollies or candy will do nothing positive and makes you feel gross afterwards.

If you think about the big picture and you want to get the most out of your life you MUST look after the ONLY body that you have. How on earth can people justify owning an expensive car or boat or whatever, spending time and money on maintenance, repairs, supplies, services and accessories giving it the best of everything while they only supply their own bodies with sub-standard fuel?

Cars and other toys are replaceable and only needed a few hours of each day. You CAN’T replace your body. You need it all day every day until you leave this world. Treat is as your best friend and should the priority receiving everything it requires for peak performance.

I always suggest that once a month everyone should consider letting their guard down and eating something nice and naughty but for the rest of the time you must eat healthy, fresh, nutritious varied food. It’s a crime not to and will only lead you down a negative path.

Enough preaching. Here are some suggestions to help shed unwanted body-fat through your eating habits:

 The food and exercise equation:

First there is an element of experimentation. You need to find out how to balance and manipulate the equation between the food that you eat and the exercise that you perform. This can be simplified further by calling it ENERGY IN and ENERGY OUT. Increase or decrease one or the other to make your body-weight go up or down.

Example:

- if you eat more and exercise less your body-weight will go up
- if you eat less and exercise more your body-weight will go down
- if you are at a point where your food intake and exercise output balance each other your body-weight will remain the same.

Work out the extent of change you need to apply to change your body-weight.

Increase your meal frequency and decrease your meal size.

If you eat three large meals a day you receive an uneven spread of calories and energy. This can affect you in the following ways:
- Slowing down of the metabolism ( the bodies total demand for energy and ability to burn it)
- A lack of energy due to the large meal gaps
- Storing of excess calories as body-fat from the large meals
- Sleeping on a full stomach again promoting body-fat storage

If you eat 5 to 7 smaller meals throughout the day all these point can be turned around increasing your metabolism and facilitating exercise and normal function. When you eat raw

foods, this is very important.

Don’t eat complex carbohydrates or junk-food after lunch.

Eat foods that are dense in energy early in the day for a sustained release of energy throughout the rest of the day. As you get closer to sleeping you need nutritious foods, such as salads and stir-fried veges, lean meats and fish, that provide less energy because excess calories will be unused and stored as fat. Dinner should also be a smaller meal than it traditionally is to aid this. Breakfast and lunch should be the larger meals as they are the energy providers for your day and any exercise that you do.

 Drink lots of water.

Water is the catalyst for every function and chemical reaction in the body. If you keep yourself hydrated it will assist you in many roles such as body-fat loss. You can train harder and longer maintaining a healthy internal environment by keeping up the blood volume reducing pressure on the cardio-vascular system. The sodium and potassium concentrations of the muscles will remain balanced promoting healthy muscle contraction. Drinks lots of water to exercise properly and stay healthy. Adequate water supplies will speed up all the processes within the body including fat metabolism.

 Avoid These:

Pasta, bread, buns, oats, cereals, white rice, noodles, potatoes, mash, chips, pumpkin, couscous, polenta, pastry, alcohol, junk-food, snack-food, desserts, pizza, crumbed stuff, batter, oil, butter, sugar, salt, MSG, cheese, fast food and fried food especially after lunch.

Eat.
Salads, vegetables, fruits and herbs of many colors. Fresh, raw, organic and cooked foods. Fish, beef, chicken, tofu, lean lamb, protein drinks and supplements which are free of sugar.

Do what is best for your health and enjoy it. Have fun with different exercises and different raw foods daily. Enjoy your foods. Stay Positive and belief in yourself and your abilites to be the best you can be daily.
