The definition of good health is your body being free from physical and mental disease. Depression goes with poor health, if you are not feeling well then you feel depressed. Good health starts with making your mind stronger, healthy, and relaxed, the body will follow. This involves eating the proper amounts of vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, the right kinds of fats and water. Just don’t overeat, that causes stomach problems and becoming overweight. Along with eating properly, you need to get plenty of exercise and rest.

As we age, our parents advise to eat our fruits and vegetables are more important then ever before. As long as those foods don’t interfere with any medications. According to the new food pyramid, women over the age of 51 should have 1 1/2 cups of fruit and two cups of vegetables a day where as men over the age of 51 need two cups of fruit and two and a half cups of vegetables a day.

Besides providing vitamin C, citrus fruits have other benefits in prevention of diseases. The chemical found in citrus fruit-limonoids have been found to help in fighting cancers like skin, mouth, lung, stomach, breast, and colon. Another cancer fighting food is tomatoes. There was a three-year study at the University of California Los Angeles that followed fifty men that have prostate cancer that pomegranates had shown promise in killing cancer cells. This was based on a study that the University of Wisconsin Medical School did on mice; that received a high concentration of pomegranate extract. The study showed a slowing of the cancer’s progression and the decrease of the PSA, a marker that is an indicator for prostate cancer in human males.
A compound in blueberries shows promise in lowering cholesterol in preliminary laboratory studies, according to the USDA. And everyone knows that the best way to clear up an urinary tract infection without having to resort to antibiotics is to drink cranberry juice. There has been a long-term study of the effect of cranberry juice on cholesterol levels, by the American Chemical Society. This study showed that the levels of the good cholesterol rose significantly.

Tomatoes are not the only food that protects against prostate cancer, cabbage does as well. The eating of vegetables on a daily basis helps against hardening of the arteries, which helps lower blood pressure. Many times, people overlook the health benefits of the foods they eat.
